I came across this problem in my Kubuntu OS a few months back when inspite of enabling sound on desktop notifier, there was no sound on speaker. Firstly it can be annoying not able to hear sounds on the OS but the solution is easy to this problem.
If sound is not coming, try typing 'alsamixer' on the console and see whether something is Muted (MM), Press M to mute/unmute the speakers, adjust the sound level by the arrow keys and the sound will come .
Alsamixer is basically a graphical mixer program for the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) that is used to configure sound settings and adjust the volume.
